Sometimes you meet someone who touches your life forever.

That sweltering August afternoon back in 1996 seemed like another typical "dog day". But when my sister Jo and I stepped into Mike's Books & Records on busy Columbia Pike in Bailey's Crossroads, Virgina, it was as if we were stepping back into another era. A bell tinkled over the door as we walked in for the first time. Shelf after shelf of wonderful old volumes lined the shop, books of every type. History, philosophy, Civil War, fiction, poetry, Americana...you name it, Mike seemed to have it in stock! Antiques and vintage record albums were there too. And the proprieter himself?

His name was Michael Hardesty. In the next three hours, the three of us, Jo, Mike and I talked and got to know each other...

They made the trip all the way from the Hardesty hometown of Sigourney, Iowa
